Abstract
Abstract. The aim of this paper is to identify the determinants of spatial economic development in the Russian regions. The relevance of this topic is due to the non-uniform location of productive forces in the Russian economy and the need for instruments that stimulate balanced development in the Russian regions. In this paper, the different approaches to the measurement of spatial concentration are discussed. To measure the level of business concentration in the Russian regions we use the Herfindahl – Hirshman and Ellison – Glaeser indices. To calculate these indices we use the Orbis database of Russian industrial firms for 2005–2012. We get the following results: first, the analysis of the indices proved the existence of significant disbalance in the spatial development in the Russian economy at the regional level. Second, a set of factors that influence the regional development of the Russian economy is proposed. These factors include socio-economic, infrastructural, and external ones, the level of human capital, financial indicators, the level of innovative activity in the region, agglomeration effects and the effectiveness of the regional government. Third, by using simple linear regression we seek to establish statistical interdependence among these factors and the level of spatial economic development in the Russian regions. The main hypotheses were confirmed. The estimation of the multiple regression model is the direction of future research. Here we define peculiar properties that should be taken into account while constructing the multiple regression model.
